Multi-modal Writing Project
Rationale
My Multi-modal writing project takes into consideration ongoing analysis of contextual variables (Domain KSA 1) by including types of writing, student choice and opinion, and teacher modelling and personalization. It also includes the recording of decisions on what teaching and learning strategies to apply by providing examples of my assessment in my course outline (Domain 1 KSA 5). Literature Circles and podcasting assist in furthering students' understanding (Domain 1 KSA 3). |
Reflection
I've shared this Blendspace with various teachers, first year teachers as a resource for their planning. Blendspace is an easy tool to organize teaching strategies, handouts, videos etc. in one place and then simply giving the link to teachers. Students have used it for creating their own portfolios as well as a format for projects. I find that teachers use media resources more regularly than hard copy texts. |
Website on Differentiation
Rationale
My “Discoveries in Education” website on differentiation links to both the first domain of "planning and preparation" (KSA 1) and the third domain of "instruction" (KSA 8)of Alberta Learning’s TQS. The entire site takes into consideration the belief that “all students can learn” (KSA 4) making learning accessible to all students through various differentiation strategies. Teachers’ analysis of contextual variables underlies their reasoned judgements and decisions about which specific pedagogical skills and abilities to apply in order that students can achieve optimum learning. The site itself discusses using technology to allow for student learning styles In the Technology and differentiation section thus touching upon KSA 3 (and 8). The tiering section requires teachers to know their curriculum (KSA 5) throughly. by offering a range of activities and planning for contextual variables (KSA 1). The “compacting curriculum” section also covers KSA 3 as the teacher has to monitor effectiveness and appropriateness.

Reflection
The intent of this was to open up discussion and present information and strategies for differentiation. At present most, if not all, high school classes in my district are streamed and staff at my school are slightly dismissive of differentiation citing that differentiation is more effective in “elementary and junior high” classrooms because these classrooms are filled with mixed ability learners. This belief is being challenged however as my district is in the process of implementing a “family/quad/pod” redesign at the high school where students will not streamed, and teachers will have to teach to a variety of learners. I am part of a pilot project for High School Redesign that will be first to implement these “pods”. Needless to say, the teachers at my school have expressed “apprehension” towards a classroom of students of a mixed ability students. I am hoping that this project will be a help to these teachers who feel insecure in their own teaching understand that differentiation is good teaching practice that will increase the success of every student and that the implementation of student “pods” can be successful. Besides being informative wanted to personalize this resource by presenting some strategies I have tried in my High School English class and a reflection on each. Eventually, I would like teachers to have the opportunity to share differentiation strategies they have used as well as strategies they are thinking of using. It would like it to be eventually a site where teachers can share, question, and reflect and share resources. |
